Johnson flip-flops, now supports gay marriage

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO-AM) - U.S. Senator Tim Johnson has changed his position on same sex marriage.  Johnson released a brief statement yesterday saying he now supports marriage equality legislation.

"After lengthy consideration, my views have evolved sufficiently to support marriage equality legislation. This position doesn't require any religious denomination to alter any of its tenets; it simply forbids government from discrimination regarding who can marry whom."

Johnson voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, DOMA, in 1996.  DOMA prevents the federal government from recognizing any marriages between gay or lesbian couples for the purpose of federal laws or programs.  The act also says individual states do not have to legally acknowledge the relationships of gay and lesbian couples married in another state.
