VERMILLION, S.D. (KWSN)—Emily Goldstein’s penalty-kick goal came moments after South Dakota had worked to tie the match and Iowa State tacked on an insurance goal in a 3-1 victory against the Coyotes Sunday at USD Soccer Complex.

Goldstein was credited with an assist on an early goal by Erin Green that put the Cyclones (2-0-0) up 1-0. USD (0-1-1) took twice as many shots as Iowa State in the opening half, but trailed at the break.

A foul and a well-played free kick led to South Dakota’s equalizer eight minutes into the second half. Kasha Meyer fed Danielle Anderson with a pass to the left side of the goal and Anderson drilled it to tie the score at 1-1. It was Anderson’s fifth collegiate goal and the first collegiate point for Meyer.

A scrum in front of the goal, a pile of bodies lying on the grass and a hand ball called on the ‘Yotes led to the penalty kick 73 seconds after Anderson’s goal. Jennifer Dominguez made it 3-1 in the 63rd minute after intercepting a play back to the keeper and netting the freebie.

USD had a 15-12 advantage on shots, but the Cyclones were more accurate, placing seven shots on goal. Coyote goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor saved a few goals with some outstanding play and was credited with four saves in all.

After starting its season with three home matches that included an exhibition, South Dakota will play its next five matches outside of Vermillion. The Coyotes take on Wyoming Friday (Aug. 30) and Colorado Springs Sunday (Sept. 1).
