VERMILLION, S.D. (KWSN) —South Dakota senior linebacker Tyler Starr finished ninth in the Buck Buchanan Award voting announced Monday by The Sports Network.
Starr was one of 20 finalists for the award, which honors the top defensive player in FCS. Senior Brad Daly became the second Montana State defensive end to win the award in as many seasons. Daly received 64 of 147 first-place votes from a national panel of sports information directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries.
Starr is the 2013 Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He was a finalist for the Buchanan Award for the second year in a row. In this year’s balloting, Starr received four first-place votes, five second-place votes, eight third-place votes, and six fourth- and fifth-place votes.
Starr led the MVFC in sacks (9.0), tackles for loss (15.0) and forced fumbles (4). He finished second on the team in tackles with 71. He also had an interception and was credited with four pass breakups.
