Sioux Falls, S.D. (KELO-AM) - Four members of a Sioux Falls family died in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 just west of Sioux Falls on Saturday, Feb. 23.
James Arthur Vollmer, 52, was driving eastbound in a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. Near mile marker 394 the vehicle left the roadway and entered the median. It struck a cable guardrail and continued to slide in the snow-filled median and down an embankment. It vaulted from one side of the embankment and struck the other side before coming to rest.
Vollmer died at the scene, as did back-seat passengers Allysa Vollmer, 16, and Caleb Vollmer, 13. Julie Louise Vollmer, 48, the front-seat passenger, was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital where she died of injuries from the crash.
All four occupants were wearing seatbelts.
The cause of the crash has not been determined, and no further information is immediately available.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, Minnehaha County Emergency Management, Sioux Falls Rural Metro, Crooks Fire and Rescue and Sanford Trauma 1 helicopter assisted.
