New, deadly virus kills hundreds of thousands of baby pigs

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Researchers at South Dakota State University are working to stem the tide of a virus that’s killing baby pigs nationwide.

Interim Department Head for Veterinary Science, Doctor Russ Daly, says the industry has no immunity for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus. (PED)

Daly says an established swine disease called PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Repsiratory Syndrom) is the most economically devastating disease.  He says PRRS can cost swine producers over $660,000 every year in the United Sates alone.  He says SDSU was one of the very first labs to find out that PRRS was cause by a specific virus.

Daly says State worked with Iowa State in developing diagnostic testing for PED and a similar virus, TGE, that also has plagued pig farms for decades
