SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - It’s almost three months after the ice and snow storm and the city is still dealing with tons of cleanup, this time along Big Sioux River bridges.
City Street/Fleet Manager Galen Huber says the goals are to reduce potential flooding and keep the river in its channel to reduce shore erosion.
Huber says crews removed 200 tons of trees and branches from the 8th Street Bridge yesterday. He says when the big rain came through last month it flooded the river. He says that brought more material down the river. He says every bridge in downtown Sioux Falls, all the way up to Yankton Trail Park, had tons of tree debris up against the abutments.
Huber expects to remove 60 tons of debris from the 6th Street Bridge today. (6/26)
Huber says river cleanup began six weeks ago when city crews removed trees and branches.
