Sioux Falls, SD (KWSN) –An NBA exhibition contest and a regular-season NCAA Division I men’s basketball game are part of the events for the inaugural year of the Pentagon by Sanford Health. The Minnesota Timberwolves will face the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 10, while the University of Wisconsin is slated to play St. John’s University (NY) on Nov. 8.
The Pentagon is scheduled to open in September and will hold a series grand opening events, including this pair of basketball games, throughout October and November for the Sioux Falls community.
“This is an exciting way to celebrate the opening of the Pentagon, a facility we believe is a great community treasure that will spur economic development,” said Kelby Krabbenhoft, president and CEO of Sanford. “These games also serve as an avenue to showcase our world-class talent in orthopedics and sports medicine patient care, training and research. Wisconsin was gracious enough to give up a home game to make this a reality, and through our sports performance researchers, we enjoy a longstanding relationship with the Timberwolves, who were already exploring a Sioux Falls game.”
An NCAA tournament team in 2012-13 and member of the Big Ten, Wisconsin posted a 23-12 mark last season; St. John’s was selected for the National Invitational Tournament and finished the year 17-16. The Timberwolves are coming off a 31-51 campaign in 2012-13, while the Bucks posted a 38-44 record on their way to the playoffs last season.
Tickets for both games (times to be determined) go on sale later this summer through Ticketmaster. The Timberwolves tilt with the Bucks will be televised on Fox Sports North, and the Wisconsin/St. John’s matchup is expected to be picked up by a national network.
The Pentagon is a 160,000-square-foot, 3,200-seat facility comprised of nine basketball courts (six high school regulation, two professional/college practice courts and the “heritage” court). While the entire structure features modern design and amenities, the heritage court located in the center of the building will pay homage to 1950s/1960s basketball.
The facility, as the name describes, is the shape of a pentagon. Floor space can be transitioned from basketball to accommodate 11 volleyball courts and also wrestling and cheer/dance events. The Pentagon is focused on athletics but will also serve other community needs.
The Pentagon is the center piece of the Sanford Sports Complex located along Westport Avenue between Benson Road and West 54th Street. The 162-acre complex is the home of the Sanford FIELDHOUSE and nine Junior Football fields. The Sioux Falls Ice Sports Association has announced plans to construct the Scheels IcePlex, and the Sioux Falls Tennis Association is also working to build a venue on site.
