Daugaard's budget may,or may not, include medicaid expansion

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Under the Affordable Health Care Act, states have the option of expanding Medicaid and Governor Dennis Daugaard has said he may recommend a delay.

Medicaid, a combination of state and federal money, pays health care costs for low-income South Dakotans.

Daugaard will reveal his decision when he delivers his budget address to legislators the first week in December.  If he proposes that the state spend the federal dollars for Medicaid expansion, he'll include that number in his budget.  If not, then Medicaid expansion would likely be shelved this year.

Some 116,000 South Dakotans, including children, adults and disable residents, are now covered by Medicaid.

The state estimates about 48,500 residents, mostly adults without children, would be covered under the expansion.
