Johnson's career weekend nabs her setter of the week honors

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (KWSN) - Sophomore setter Marissa Johnson was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference setter of the week in Monday afternoon release from the conference. Johnson led the Vikings to a 4-0 start to the season and the unofficial SpringHill Suites Invitational title.

Johnson set a career-high in assists on the way to earning all-tournament honors and keeping the Vikings undefeated. In the pseudo-championship game against 3-0 host Anchorage Alaska the Viking setter dished out a career-best 57 assists, including 21 in Augustana's marathon 29-27 second-set win. Johnson also picked up her first double-double of the season - fifth of her career - pairing 11 digs with her 57 assists against the Seawolves.

The sophomore from Omaha, Neb. finished the tournament with a 13.77 assist/set average, over three more than the second-best average for setters at the tournament. In all four matches, Johnson dished out at least 40 assists in three of Augustana's four matches and assisted on 38 kills in the season-opener.

Passing a milestone in the process, Johnson now sits at 1,075 career assists and ranks 10th in the Augustana record books. Johnson tied a career high with three block assists in the Vikings' dismantling of American International and finished the weekend with four total blocks and 26 kills.After the first weekend of action, Johnson sits atop the conference leaderboard when it comes to setting up her teammates.  

Johnson's 13.77 assist/set average leads the NSIC which boasts four ranked teams in the top 14 of the latest AVCA coaches' poll.The Vikings now return to the friendly confines of the Elmen Center to host the NSIC Challenge on Sept. 13 and 14.
