MIAMI, FL (KWSN) – South Dakota State played close with Jacksonville on Friday morning at the FIU Invitational, but came up on the short end of a 3-0 match, falling by the set scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-16.
“Hopefully we learned a lesson this morning in paying attention to the details,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “We came out unfocused in the beginning and once we settled down we battled. I’m confident that we’ll be sharper tonight against FIU.”
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 1-6 on the season, while the Dolphins remain perfect at 8-0.
Wagner Larson led the Jackrabbit offense with eight kills and one of the team’s two service aces, while Mikala Hora and Courtney Roberts both added six kills in the loss. Larson and Hora also tied career-highs with four block assists.
Lizzie Palmer led the defense with 15 digs, with Kacey Herrmann added 10 digs and the other service ace.
Gabriela Roman led all players with 14 kills and added nine digs. Sammie Strausbaugh finished with 12 kills and seven digs. JU setter Kendall Courtney posted the game’s only double-double with 35 set assists and 10 digs.
The Jackrabbits take on the host FIU Panthers on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET, and then get Saturday off before closing the weekend on Sunday against Tennessee-Chattanooga at 10 a.m. ET.
