SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN) – Courtney Ysker nearly had half of Augustana's kills as she led th Vikings in a blowout sweep of Drury to close out the first day of the NSIC Challenge on Friday evening. Augustana's 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 win over the Panthers places them at 6-0 and DU falls to 2-4.
Ysker tallied 18 of the 42 Viking kills in their second match of the tournament they are co-hosting. The senior outside hitter from Windom, Minn. also picked up 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. With 40 attempts and just four errors, Ysker finished with a .350 attack percentage.
Helping Ysker carry the Viking offensive load, Holly Hafemeyer tacked on 12 kills to stretch the senior middle blocker's run of double-digit kills to three consecutive matches.Although the offense was led by Ysker and Hafemeyer, the Viking defense scooped up a season-high 70 digs limiting the Panthers to a lowly .078 hitting percentage. The Vikings only managed a .252 attack percentage despite the blowout victory, but 14 block assists and a solo stuff from Hafemeyer paved the way to the victory.
The first two sets featured much of the same: the Vikings build a lead, the Vikings hold a lead, the Vikings win 25-15. In the first stanza, Augustana opened up with a 14-4 run and never looked back – Ysker had five kills in those first 14 points. The second set featured a tighter start until Augustana used a slew of blocks to distance themselves from the Panthers.
The Vikings trailed only twice in the match; DU only held a brief 1-0 lead at the beginning of the second and third sets. Augustana nursed a healthy lead in the third set and finished off the visitors from Missouri 25-19 in fitting fashion with a block from Hafemeyer.
Setter Marissa Johnson set up her teammates with 36assists as she continues a fast start to the year. Brittany Cech led a trio of Vikings with double-digit digs after she collected a season-high 17 against the Panthers. Kayla Wallerich added 13 and Ysker completed her double-double with 11.
The Vikings look to improve upon their unscathed record as they try to best the 2008 team's start. The 2008 Augustana squad was led by head coach Ashley Buckley in her first season as they were the last team to open a season 6-0. They will try to move to 7-0 with a match against Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m., Sept. 14 at the Elmen Center.
