SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The South Dakota wing of the Civil Air Patrol is tasked with finding missing aircraft, performing damage assessment, tracking animals and assisting the National Weather Service in tracking tornadoes.
C-A-P Incident Commander Lieutenant Colonel Rick Larson says the Air Force has been testing the Patrol this week and it ends Saturday. The Wing will hold a major operational exercise involving the squadrons in Aberdeen, Brookings, Custer, Pierre, Rapid City, Spearfish and Sioux Falls.
Larson says C-A-P personnel, vehicles, and aircraft will be in Sioux Falls. The Air Force is measuring the Wing's ability to respond to a variety of emergency scenarios. The Saturday operation features a high tempo, multi-faceted emergency services exercise.
Larson says the Patrol will get the Air Force grade next week.
