Augustana football picked sixth overall; fourth in the South Division in NSIC Preseason Poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (KWSN)– Augustana College was picked to finish sixth overall and fourth in the South Division in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Football Coaches' Poll, the league announced on Thursday. 

Minnesota Duluth was picked as the preseason favorite in both the overall and North Division polls earning 8 first-place votes in the overall poll and seven of eight in the North Division.  Minnesota State earned six first-place votes and was picked to win the South Division.UMD's Austin Sikorski was named the North Division Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Grant Singer from U-Mary was named the North Division Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

In the South Division, Southwest Minnesota State's Tyler Tonderum was named the preseason offensive player of the year and Minnesota State's Nathan Hancock the preseason defensive player of the year.  Augustana's Dajon Newell and Jake Lee were listed as "Players to Watch" in the NSIC in 2014. Newell, a running back from Lakeville, Minn., enters his senior season needing 1,067 yards to break the career rushing record at Augustana.

Newell rushed for 530 yards and three touchdowns on 149 carries last season, leading the team in touches and yards. He averaged 3.6 yards per carry and 48.2 yards per game while catching 22 passes for 114 yards.

As a sophomore, Newell was an All-NSIC South Division Second Team honoree after rushing for a career-high 1,090 yards, becoming the fourth player in school history to rush for 1,000 or more yards in a season. Lee was named preseason first team All-America by USA College Football this summer after coming off a career-year in 2013. Lee, a native of Blue Earth, Minn., was an All-NSIC First Team selection last season after setting career-highs in tackles (44), tackles for loss (11.0), sacks (4.0) to go along with two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

He recorded at least one tackle in all 11 games last season, including a career-high 10 against Minnesota State on Oct. 12. Second-year head coach Jerry Olszewski will lead the Vikings into fall camp looking to improve on a 4-7 finish from last season. Olszewski welcomes 108 players to fall camp on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Augustana opens the 2014 season on the road, traveling to Crookston, Minn., to take on Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6.
