Alarming report on South Dakota highway deaths

by
Lee Axdahl (Download MP3)

Pierre, SD (KELO-AM) The Department of Public Safety is out with an alarming report on the number of highway deaths in South Dakota so far this year. There have been 24 deaths in 2014 compared to 13 deaths in the same period last year.

State Highway Safety Director Lee Axdahl says that overdriving is probably the biggest reason for the spike - people not being cautious enough on unfamiliar roads in bad weather. But he also says that half of the fatailities this year were not wearing seat belts.

Axdahl says these deaths are more than just numbers in a data base; they are family members, neighbors, friends and a life that is gone forever.
