SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana College head football coach Jerry Olszewski announced today that Brian Bergstrom, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator in 2013, has been promoted to defensive coordinator.

The move follows Minnesota State University, Mankato's announcement of the hiring of Jake Dickert as defensive coordinator on Thursday. Dickert, who joined Olszewski's staff in 2013 and coached the defensive backs last season, led the Viking defense to an impressive season in his first at Augustana.

The Vikings finished the season ranking 20th in the country and third in the NSIC allowing just 19.5 points per game. Augustana finished third in the NSIC and 27th in the nation allowing 329.3 yards per game, third in the NSIC and 44th in the nation giving up just 135.5 rushing yards per game. The Vikings also finished fourth in the conference and 47th in the country in red zone defense at 72.7 percent. Dickert came to Augustana after spending one season at FCS Southeast Missouri State University as the defensive backs coach.

Prior to that, Dickert had coaching stints at the University of South Dakota and North Dakota State University. "We wish Jake the very best in his new position and appreciate his efforts during his tenure at Augustana," Olszewski said. "Brian Bergstrom will assume the duties of defensive coordinator effective immediately. I am blessed to have the right man to move our defense forward already on our staff. Brian is an excellent football coach, recruiter, and man with successful coordinator experience that knows our system and our players. I have known Brian for a number of years and fortunate to have him direct our defense. I look forward to coach Bergstrom continuing to raise the bar of Viking defense for years to come and staying among the top defenses in the NSIC. A search for a secondary coach has begun and will continue until the position is filled."

Bergstrom led Augustana's special teams to two top 11 national rankings last season. Augustana led the NSIC and ranked 11th in all of Division II allowing just 15.9 yards per kick return and led the league and ranked 10th in the country with three blocked punts.

Teagan Brown (defensive back) returned two blocked punts for touchdowns during 2013, leading the nation individually in punt return touchdowns. Bergstrom coached two All-NSIC performers at linebacker, including first team selection Ben Skelly who led the team and ranked sixth in the NSIC with 99 total tackles. Brandon Mohr, who missed one game due to injury, was named second team All-NSIC and compiled 92 tackles, including 9.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks.

Augustana's kickers were 9 of 16 on field goal attempts on the season and 27 of 28 on PAT attempts with Lucas Wainman hitting 10 of 10 and Ben Albrecht 16 of 16. Wainman hit a school record 53-yard field goal in the season opener against MSU Moorhead on Sept. 7. Prior to Augustana, Bergstrom served as defensive backs coach and assistant strength and conditioning coach at Minnetonka High School in 2012.

Bergstrom spent six seasons as the defensive coordinator at Gustavus Adlophus from 2006-2011 in addition to teaching in the Health and Exercise Department. He also served one season as the defensive coordinator at Crown College in Saint Bonifacius, Minn. Bergstrom was a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State from 2003-05 where he coached linebackers.

Bergstrom was a three-time all-conference linebacker for Gustavus from 1998-2001 and started four seasons at middle linebacker. He graduated as the program's all-time leading tackler with 406 career stops.

He also set the school record for tackles in a season with 136 in 1999. Bergstrom earned three All-America distinctions at Gustavus and was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American.

Located in Sioux Falls, S.D., Augustana College is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
