911 Board Seeks Vendors to Modernize System

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO-AM) – The South Dakota 911 Coordination Board has posted for public view two requests for proposals to provide equipment and services needed to modernize the 911 emergency calling system.

One proposal is for statewide emergency services to allow call access, transfers and backups among the public safety answering points, or 911 dispatch centers, within South Dakota. The other proposal is for statewide Geographic Information System (GIS) data and managed services to support the state Next Generation 911 system.

“The 911 system in South Dakota is based on telephone technology from the 1970s and 1980s. It is nearing the end of its useful life,’’ said Ted Rufledt, Jr., chair of the 911 Coordination Board. “Our 911 centers are unable to take advantage of the rapid growth of wireless and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone technology. The Next Generation 911 project will put in place the infrastructure needed to allow our 911 centers to accept things such as pictures, videos, text messages and other forms of data the public now often has available when they make a call to 911.’’

The board recently adopted a state 911 Master plan, available online athttp://dps.sd.gov/documents/RPT130815skwSD911MasterPlan.pdf.
