SIOUX FALLS, SD (KWSN) – The Sioux Falls Canaries signed LHP Joe Testa to a contract and released RHP Kirk Clark on Friday. Testa will be in uniform and available tonight when the Canaries open a six-game homestand against Fargo-Moorhead at 7:05 PM.
Testa, 28, spent 2013 with the Amarillo Sox of the American Association and the Newark Bears of the Can-Am League. With the Sox, he was 0-1 with an 8.16 ERA in 17 relief appearances. He struck out 16 batters in 14 1/3 innings for Amarillo while picking up one save. The Sox traded Testa to Newark and where he made nine starts, going 1-5 with a 6.09 ERA.
The left-hander opened up the 2014 season with the Gary-Southshore Railcats, going 0-1 with a eight strikeouts in five relief appearances.
Originally signed by the Minnesota Twins in 2008 as an undrafted free agent, Testa spent parts of three seasons in the Twins organization before being traded to the Washington Nationals in 2010 along with big league catcher Wilson Ramos in exchange for Nationals closer Matt Capps.
In five minor league seasons, Testa racked up 286 strikeouts while going 18-11 with a 3.36 ERA.
Kirk Clark allowed 12 runs on 18 hits for the Canaries in 10 appearances in 2014. He went 0-1 with a 10.45 ERA while walking six and striking out nine.
