Xcel asks for South Dakota rate increase

Undated (KELO-AM) Xcel Energy is asking for an 8 percent rate increase in South Dakota.

Xcel's Sioux Falls Manager Jim Wilcox says if the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission approves the request, it will mean a monthly increase of about $8.50 for the average residential customer.

Wilcox says Xcel needs the increase - in part - to help pay for major refurbishing of it's nuclear power plants. He says Sioux Falls gets about 30 percent of its energy from nuke plants.

Wilcox also says the increase will help pay for major upgrades to the energy grid in Sioux Falls, eventually doubling capacity in the ever-growing city.

Wilcox expects the PUC to make a decision sometime late this year or by the end of the year.
