Jackrabbits down Maine, 5-3‏

by

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL (KWSN) – South Dakota State scored three times in the top of the first inning and held off a late Maine rally for a 5-3 victory in college baseball action Saturday afternoon.

The Jackrabbits improved to 8-5 overall in winning their second consecutive game at the Snowbird Invitational. Maine dropped to 3-10 on the season.

SDSU struck quickly in the top of the first as Scott Splett led off with a single and scored two batters later on a double by Jordan Varga. Eric Danforth followed later in the inning with a two-run, two-out single to score Varga and Aaron Machbitz.

Jackrabbit starter Chris Anderson faced the minimum number of batters through the first three innings before allowing his lone run of the game in the fourth. Colin Gay and Troy Black opened the frame with consecutive singles and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Gay later scored on a groundout by Kyle Silva.

Two Maine errors led to a pair of Jackrabbit runs on only one hit in the top of the eighth. The first run of the inning scored on the second of the two Black Bear errors, and Cody Sharrow pushed the margin to 5-1 with a sacrifice flies.

The errors further proved costly as Maine put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth against Jackrabbit reliever Talon Jumper. Black and Brian Doran hit back-to-back doubles for the first Black Bear run of the inning and Silva added a run-scoring single to draw Maine to within 5-3.

SDSU closer J.D. Moore then entered the game and struck out Steven Adam to end the inning with the go-ahead run on base. Moore also struck out the side in the ninth for his first save of the season.

Anderson struck out six, walked two and scattered five hits in earning his first victory as a Jackrabbit.

Varga doubled twice and Al Robbins added a pair of singles to lead SDSU’s eight-hit effort.

Black was 3-for-4 to lead Maine’s nine-hit attack.

The Jackrabbits are scheduled to continue play at the Snowbird Invitational Sunday with a pair of games. SDSU and Maine are slated for an 11 a.m. Eastern Time first pitch, followed by a 3 p.m. game against Georgetown.
