BROOKINGS, S.D. – Alex Schultz knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the eighth inning, lifting Omaha to a 3-2 victory over South Dakota State in the opening game of a four-game Summit League baseball series Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

The Mavericks, who rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, improved to 22-17 overall and 7-6 in league play. SDSU dropped below the .500 mark to 21-22 overall and 5-6 in The Summit League.

SDSU took the lead in its first at-bat of the game as Scott Splett led off by slicing an opposite-field home run just inside the right-field foul pole. The Jackrabbits added another run an inning later as Al Robbins opened the home half of the second with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Reid Clary and scored on Cody Sharrow’s two-out double.

Omaha knotted the game in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run, two-out double by Caleb Palensky.

Maverick starter Tyler Fox settled into a groove as he kept SDSU off the board for the final five innings of his seven-inning effort. Fox scattered six hits, walked two and struck out four.

Meanwhile, Jackrabbit starter Adam Bray turned in another solid start before running into more trouble in the eighth. Collin Leif and Clayton Taylor both walked before Schultz bounced a single through the right side for the game-winning run.

Anthony Falcone and Josh Bullock each struck out two batters in an inning of relief, with Bullock earning his fourth save of the season.

Bray, who fell to 5-4 on the season, struck out seven and walked two in eight innings.

Palensky and Tyler Splichal each notched two of Omaha’s eight hits. SDSU also finished with eight hits and was led by freshman Matt Johnson with a pair of hits.

The two squads are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
