SIOUX FALLS, S.D     Xcel Energy continues work this spring on a $67 million system upgrade in Sioux Falls.

Manager Jim Wilcox says work includes doubling line capacity, a new substation and automatic switches to sense outages and restore power.

Wilcox says the upgrades include automated "intelliteam" switches that chains together main line feeders so if one goes down a lineman won't have to physically take a boom truck to the site and manually operate switches.

The upgrade will also be able to carry twice the power to provide more capacity for a growing Sioux Falls.

Wilcox says these technologies were first envisioned about ten years ago and Xcel is looking ahead to the next ten years and beyond.  Expect an announcement next month about Xcel's long-tern visons.

Wilcox says the improvements will mean a rate increase but he couldn’t say how large it would be or when they’ll petition the Public Utilities Commission.
