SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Charlie Valerio and Troy Alexander each racked up a pair of hits, but the Canaries dropped their 2021 American Association regular-season opener 9-0 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes Tuesday at The Birdcage.
The teams meet for the second game of the three-game series Wednesday at 7:05 pm.
Valerio, who will represent the Dominican Republic in Olympic baseball qualifying trials, posted a single and a triple. Alexander, a former St. Paul Saint in his first year with the Canaries, posted a pair of singles.
The Birds boarded men on second and third with one out in the first but could not breakthrough. Winnipeg tagged Sioux Falls starter Angel Ventura (0-1) for five runs in a laborious third to build a 5-0 advantage they would not relinquish. Kyle Martin, Logan Hill, and Tyler Hill all recorded two RBI for the Goldeyes. Eduard Reyes (1-0) earned the win for Winnipeg with five scoreless innings.
The Canaries will start RHP Carlos Pimentel (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Christian James (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for Winnipeg Wednesday. A live feed of the game will be available via Fox Sports 98.1 FM/1230 AM KWSN.
