SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — South Dakota saw a surprisingly high number of suicides in early 2021, leading prevention experts to worry that a major healthcare crisis may be emerging in the state, with young adults, healthcare workers, and school-age children at greatest risk.
With 59 suicide deaths from January through March, the state is on a record pace for suicides in 2021. Meanwhile, calls for help among potentially suicidal residents are also on the rise.
Prevention experts say lingering sadness over the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with untreated mental health conditions are seen as possible causes of the rise in suicide deaths.
In the latest article published by News Watch, available here, reporter Danielle Ferguson shares the worrisome new suicide numbers, tells who is at greatest risk, and examines what experts are doing to help those at risk.
