SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Canaries) – The Sioux Falls Canaries took down the Sioux City Explorers for the third time in five games this season Tuesday at The Birdcage. The Birds used a five-run first inning to down the X’s by a final of 7-5. The Canaries will go for the series win Wednesday night at 7:05.
Angel Ventura (5-5) was credited with the win for the Canaries. Ventura pitched six innings, allowing 11 hits for five runs (five earned). He struck out four and allowed just one walk. Danny Hrbeck (1-3) was credited with the loss for the Explorers. Hrbeck pitched one inning as the starter, allowing four hits for five runs (five earned).
Colby Wyatt induced a key double play in the seventh in two scoreless, hitless innings of work before giving way to the closer in the ninth. Caleb Frare entered in the final inning and recorded his fifth save of the season by stranding two Explorers on the base paths to close the game. He struck out the side to finish the contest.
The Canaries offense was powered by Jordan Ebert. Ebert fueled the five-run explosion in the first, teeing off for a three-run home run. He finished a season-best our four RBI. Wyatt Ulrich extended his on-base streak to 42 games by recording three hits and a run. Cade Gotta and Angelo Altavilla each notched two hits and a run. Jabari Henry recorded a hit, two RBI and scored. Zane Gurwitz piled up a hit, a run and an RBI.
Game 2 of the series will feature LHP Brett Adcock (2-6, 5.12 ERA) for the Explorers (31-26) and RHP Charlie Hasty (1-0, 6.75 ERA) for the Canaries (22-34). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Fans can hear the game on 98.1 FM, AM 1230 and KWSN.com.
