SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN.com) – Here’s your morning sports update for Thursday, February 10, 2022.
– Nebraska men’s basketball got its first Big Ten win of the season last night. Alonzo Verge Jr. scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half as the Cornhuskers beat Minnesota 78-65. Freshman Bryce McGowens had seven points and older brother Trey McGowens scored six with four assists to guide the Cornhuskers to a 32-21 lead at halftime. Minnesota shot just 37% in the first half and missed all nine of its 3-point tries. Verge took over in the second half, knocking down 7 of 8 shots after intermission to help Nebraska snap a 10-game losing streak. Jamison Battle sank 5 of 9 from 3-point range and scored 21 points — all in the second half — to pace Minnesota. The Gophers have lost five in a row.
– The Minnesota Vikings have hired former Indianapolis general manager Ryan Grigson for a senior personnel position in the front office under new general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Grigson spent the past two seasons as a senior football advisor with Cleveland where Adofo-Mensah was vice president of football operations. Grigson has worked 23 years in the NFL, including as general manager of the Colts from 2012-16. He won two executive of the year awards in 2012, and the Colts were 52-34 during his tenure.
– Sacramento pulled away late to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 132-119 last night. Harrison Barnes scored 30 points. Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. The result snaps a five-game winning streak for Minnesota.
– Caitlin Clark scored 32 points and No. 25 Iowa women’s basketball scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to pull out an 88-78 win over Minnesota. Monika Czinano scored six of her 23 points in that run, which included a three-point play by Clark, to help the Hawkeyes open a 73-61 lead after entering the final quarter with a 62-61 advantage. Deja Winters had a career-high 30 points for the Golden Gophers. Iowa opened a 13-point lead on a Kylie Feuerbach 3-pointer in the middle of the second quarter but Sara Scalia scored eight straight, including consecutive 3-pointers, to help Minnesota get within 42-37 at the half.

– South Dakota men’s basketball look to get back above .500 in conference play tonight at Omaha. The 6-6 Coyotes tip off against U of Omaha at 7 p.m. Coverage starts at 6:30 on Q 95.7. South Dakota’s women are in Vermillion to play Omaha at 7 p.m. As for South Dakota State, the Jackrabbit men are at Denver with tip-off at 8 p.m. and the women host Denver at 7 p.m.
