SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN.com) — Here’s your morning sports update for Wednesday, February 23, 2022.
– Washington boys’ basketball earned a rivalry win over Lincoln last night, 68-65. Mikele Kambalo led the victorious Warriors with 25 points on 11-of-21 shooting. Joe Uttecht added 13. Four Patriots were in double figures, led by 16 from Khalil Cisse. JT Rock had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Elsewhere in boys’ games, Mitchell beat Brandon Valley 59-46 and Jefferson beat Pierre 64-54. Roosevelt had their game with Aberdeen Central postponed. On the girls’ side, the playoffs began in earnest last night in classes A and B. Sioux Falls Christian extended their season with a 71-40 win over Baltic. The Chargers advance to play Garretson, who blew out Madison in their first-round game. West Central and Tri-Valley also advanced in Region 3. In Region 4, Tea Area were upset by Elk Point-Jefferson 45-42, Dakota Valley, Lennox and Vermillion also advanced. – The Minnesota Wild lost 4-3 to the Ottawa Senators last night. Kevin Fiala, Jared Spurgeon and Jon Merrill scored for the Wild, who were playing the second of four games on a Canadian road trip. Cam Talbot made 30 saves.
– Keegan Murray scored 28 points as No. 25 Iowa men’s basketball defeated Michigan State 86-60. Kris Murray, Keegan’s twin brother, and Jordan Bohannon each had 11 as the Hawkeyes continued their February run.
– Nebraska men’s basketball lost to Northwestern last night 77-65. The Wildcats started the second half on a 26-14 run for an 18-point lead with about 10 minutes left and stretched it to 68-47 with 7:27 remaining. After that Nebraska never got closer than nine. Alonzo Verge Jr. and Bryce McGowens had 15 points apiece for the Cornhuskers.
– Wisconsin football has hired Bill Sheridan to coach inside linebackers as one of three changes to Paul Chryst’s staff. Chryst also announced Tuesday that Bob Bostad is switching from inside linebackers coach to offensive line coach and Mickey Turner is moving from tight ends coach to an off-field role in which he will lead Wisconsin’s recruiting efforts.
