OMAHA, NE (KELO.com) — An unfortunate redirected pass in the dying minutes of the third period sent the game into overtime, where the Sioux Falls Stampede would take away a point in a shootout loss to the Omaha Lancers Friday night at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. Sam Harris scored his sixth goal in seven games while Daniel Russell and Karsen Dorwart each had a goal and an assist. Stampede netminder Isak Posch stopped 34 of 37 shots on net.
In similar fashion to last night’s performance, the Herd came out strong in the first period. Daniel Russell put up the first tally, tipping in a shot from Easton Zueger right off an offensive zone faceoff 5:45 into the period for his 13th of the season. The Lancers answered back quickly as Michael Cameron managed to swipe in a bouncing puck during a scramble in front of the net at 7:57 to tie the game up. Omaha outshot Sioux Falls 17-7 in the period.
An exciting second period saw the Herd take back the lead at 6:16 when Daniel Russell drove toward the net shorthanded and Karsen Dorwart cleaned up the rebound for his sixth goal of the season. Omaha was quick to respond as Sioux Falls gave up their own shorthanded goal less than two minutes later to tie the game back up. The Stampede answered back at 9:41 with a power play goal by Sam Harris, tipping in a shot from Max Rud for his sixth goal in seven games. The Herd outshot the Lancers 12-10 in the period.
The third period was a continuation of solid penalty kills and good pressure from Sioux Falls. They held their lead until 17:30, when an unlucky redirection off of a Stampede skate ended up in the net, tying the game at 3-3. The game would go into overtime with Omaha outshooting Sioux Falls 7-3 in the period.
A back and forth overtime saw excellent chances for both teams and solid saves by both netminders. Overtime would go scoreless, with the Lancers outshooting the Stampede 3-2 in extra time, and 38-24 in the game.
The Herd’s Karsen Dorwart would score in the shootout, but Omaha’s Evan Werner and Micael Cameron would each get their shot by the Stampede goaltender to take the win.
Sioux Falls went 1-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Stampede are back on home ice next Friday and Saturday at the PREMIER Center. Friday is Children’s Inn night presented by Diamond Mowers.
