Right-hander William Schmidt, a projected first-round pick, pulled out of the Major League Draft on Sunday afternoon and said he will honor his commitment to LSU.
Schmidt make his declaration on social media.
โCallin Baton Rouge! Time for another Natty,โ said Schmidt, referencing the schoolโs 2023 College World Series title.
Schmidt was ranked 16th on MLBโs draft prospect rankings. He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Louisiana this past high school season.
According to nola.com, Schmidt struck out 102 in 63 2/3 innings and had a 0.44 ERA for Catholic High in Baton Rouge.
In LSU, Thompson will attend the school that had the 2023 No. 1 overall selection in right-hander Paul Skenes, who will start for the National League in Tuesdayโs All-Star Game just two months after reaching the majors.
