SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Canaries) – Angel Ventura, Jackson Maynard, and Caleb Frare combined for a four-hit shutout as the Canaries took the finale in their four-game set at Lewis and Clark Park 2-0 Thursday. The club returns home to begin a nine-game, ten-day homestand Friday vs. Lincoln.
Ventura (4-5) was magnificent, spinning seven innings of three-hit ball to engineer the shutout. He struck out four and allowed just one runner to reach third base. Maynard carved a scoreless eighth before Frare entered for his second save of the series and fourth of the season. Frare allowed a leadoff double before striking out three consecutive batters to finish the game.
Wyatt Ulrich picked up an RBI single in the second, and Trey Michalczewski recorded an RBI groundout in the fifth to give the staff all the support it would need. The Canaries outhit the X’s (30-23) 7-4. The Birds won despite stranding 13. The shutout was the first on the road this season for Sioux Falls and the staff’s first since shutting out Houston 16-0 on May 26.
The Canaries (21-31) meet the Lincoln Saltdogs (25-27) tomorrow at 7:05. LHP Ty Culbreth (6-3, 4.42 ERA) is expected to start for the Canaries.
