SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Some veteran teachers are upset, but a signing bonus for new teachers seems to be working. The Sioux Falls School District is offering bonuses of up to 10-thousand dollars for new teachers signing on for Special Education duties. Veteran Special Ed teachers spoke against the bonuses, but District Human Resources Director Becky Dorman says they’re attracting new applicants.
Dorman said officials knew there would be the risk of offending some existing teachers, but the need to hire more teachers in critical areas like Special Education made the move necessary.
Dorman says the bonuses have made a big difference.
In addition to the ten Special Ed positions that are still open, Dorman and her team are working to hire Education Assistants and substitute teachers for the fall term.
