SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) – The Summit League and its Presidents Council are aware of the adoption of South Dakota Senate Bill 46, which restricts participation on a female, women’s, or girl’s athletic team to individuals with a biological sex designation of female.
Participation of transgender student-athletes in athletic competition is a topic that is undergoing a significant amount of review and evaluation nationally. Nine other states have passed laws like SB46 and more have similar legislation pending.
The NCAA has recently updated transgender student-athlete participation policy to align with protocols developed by the domestic or international governing bodies for each applicable sport.
The Summit League will continue to monitor and educate ourselves and membership on this topic.
Statement from Summit League special adviser Josh Fenton:
“The Summit League and its member institutions have been engaged on this topic and its potential impact on our intercollegiate athletic environment. Our approach will be guided by a strong commitment to conducting and supporting intercollegiate athletic competition in welcoming and inclusive environments for all student-athletes.”
