About the Show
Calling All Sports is a 60-minute sports talk show heard daily on 15 radio stations across South Dakota and features long-time Sioux Falls sportscaster Mark Ovenden. Calling All Sports delivers the best local sports coverage and commentary in the Sioux Empire chatting with local sports names and legends, current athletes, and coaches.
About the Host
Ovenden is a sports lover and passionate about them. He was reporting driveway and yard games played there, and it became a logical choice every minute of it. During his time at college, he got an opportunity and began his on-air job in Richmond, VA. He is a proud graduate of the University of Richmond where he was pursuing a major in journalism. While in his senior year in college, Ovenden was hired by WTVR as their weekend sports anchor.
He followed a sports director position at WIFR in Rockford, IL prior to coming to Sioux Falls in 1978 for a quick 2-year stay at KSFY. In South Dakota, he got a chance to conduct radio play-by-play, which was what he actually wanted to do professionally. He began an advertising agency after 9 years at KSFY and went on to work at all three Sioux Falls stations, including 24 years as Sports Director at KDLT. In addition, he hosts a daily radio show originating from Sioux Falls radio station KWSN-AM. The show is heard on 15 stations throughout South Dakota “Calling All Sports.”
He covers local and regional sports on a nightly basis, which he loves. While in South Dakota, he had a great chance to work with many great people. The people he has met and the stories he has reported, as a result, have made this a very rewarding and enjoyable profession after all.
He says that when something you are doing you are passionate about, it is so advantageous. In the course of his time in South Dakota, the SD Coaches Association voted him as the Sportscaster of the Year. He also won multiple Sportscasts of the Year and was awarded a Distinguished Service Award from the SDHSAA. In addition, he received the prestigious Tom Brokaw Award after being recognized by the SD Volleyball Coaches Association.
