SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN.com) — It’s state tourney time in South Dakota girls’ high school basketball and the Class AA tournament began with an upset.
Jefferson stunned reigning champion and top seed Washington 47-43 to advance to the semis. The Cavaliers scored the last 11 points of the game to take the win; Jefferson’s Cierra Watkins had 16 points.
The favorites won the remaining AA games. Hannah Ronsiek had 18 points to lead two-seed O’Gorman to a 55-35 win over Lincoln. The Knights will play Brandon Valley in the semis; they beat Harrisburg 43-39.
Rapid City Stevens topped Rapid City Central 40-34 to face Jefferson in the semis. That game starts at 7 p.m. Friday with O’Gorman-BV to follow. You can hear both games on 98.1 FM, AM 1230 and KWSN.com.
In Class A, Sioux Falls Christian saw their season come to an end with a 47-34 loss to Hamlin. Hamlin advance to face West Central in the semifinals; top seed Wagner and St. Thomas More moved on to the other semifinal game.
In Class B, another big upset started the day: Viborg Hurley knocked off top-seeded Aberdeen Roncalli 69-58. The Cougars will face Corsica-Stickney in Friday’s semifinals, with DeSmet and Faith also advancing.
