SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — “I’m here today to announce that I will not challenge the results in court, and I will concede the race for Sioux Falls Mayor.” With that announcement, Jamie Smith brought the the 2026 race for Mayor of Sioux Falls to an end. Christine Erickson will become the first woman mayor of South Dakota’s largest city.
Smith made the announcement Tuesday morning, saying he’s heard about issues from voters trying to cast their ballots at the polls, and absentee voters experiencing problems receiving and returning ballots. He won’t file legal action, but says South Dakota’s election laws need to be improved to ensure that every voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot and have their ballot counted.”
Erickson will be sworn into office Friday afternoon in a ceremony that will include those who were elected to the city council.
