SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — It was a long, hard-fought battle, but Sioux Falls now has a new Mayor. Christine Erickson took the oath office this afternoon, replacing Paul TenHaken, who served for the past eight years. She becomes the first woman mayor for South Dakota’s largest city. “This is a historic first, and I am proud of what it means, but this moment is bigger than one person. It belongs to every citizen who helped us break that glass ceiling by making their vote about experience and accomplishment. It belongs to every little girl who now knows this office is open to her. And it belongs to every person who believes Sioux Falls can keep moving forward without leaving anyone behind.”
Mayor Erickson thanked former Mayor TenHaken for his service, which was extended a few weeks because of the close vote. She won the office by only four votes over Jamie Smith. She has her work cut out for her, with the annual Mayor’s Budget Address scheduled for next week.
